Philosophy

  • Wabun provides boys and girls with the opportunity to travel in uncomplicated ways in undisturbed areas. Campers develop confidence born of competence as they become proficient in canoe-tripping skills, and enjoy a wonderful growth in maturity, responsibility, and self-reliance through their experiences. The opportunities are rare, but still exist.

Season

  • 6-week session available to all campers age 10-18 — June 26th to August 8th
  • 3-week option available for campers who are 10 to 12 years old (Session I: June 26th to July 17th — Session II: July 18th to August 8th)

Directors

  • RICHARD P. LEWIS III - President and Managing Director
Dick, grandson of founding director Dick Lewis Sr., spent his first year as a camper at Wabun in 1954, and he has been the Director since 1976. Dick is a retired teacher, coach, Division Head, and Headmaster who now devotes all of his time and energies to Wabun.
  • WALTER P. HINCHMAN – Assistant Director
Walter, known as Nibby on Garden Island, has been at Wabun since 1961 when he joined the trip staff. He is now responsible for the outfitting of our trips. He was a teacher, coach, science department head, and athletic director at the Pomfret School in Connecticut for 38 years.
  • MARGARET R. LEWIS – Assistant Director
Marg spent her first summer at Wabun in 1965. She manages the office for Wabun and is a "mother" to the campers and staff; she offers support and tender encouragements to all. Marg was a teacher at the Breck School in Minneapolis, MN.

Campers

  • Boys and girls ages 10-18 travel in single-sex sections with group size usually between 8 – 10 campers. Wabun campers represent many states and several countries each summer.
  • Canoe-tipping or camping experience is not necessary for new campers (with the exception of those applying for the six-week Hudson Bay trips).

Location

  • Lake Temagami, Ontario, Canada
  • 300 miles north of Toronto
  • The Temagami region provides some of the most beautiful and scenic canoeing in North America.
In addition to the spectacular scenery, Temagami is home to a wonderful array of wildlife.

History

  • Wabun was founded in 1933 by eight educators. Its founders wanted children to have an unparalleled canoe-tripping opportunity.
  • Campers create profound relationships with the environment in which they travel and the section mates with whom they share this experience.
  • Wabun has over 3,000 alumni/ae and now enjoys 4th generation campers and staff.

Staff

  • Sections are led by experienced and capable staff, most of whom are alumni/ae, and many are parents themselves.
  • Head Staff: 21+ years old
  • Assistant Staff: 17+ years old
  • All staff are trained in the full range of wilderness canoe tripping skills.
